X_MSG
Social Telephony Project | 2009-onwards | London
In collaboration with Cliff Hammett and the Xtalk project
X_MSG is an ongoing experiment between amateur coding and pedagogy of sex work activism looking to event new communication protocols using recycled technology. The X_MSG project is a homemade social telephony system that enable sexworker activists to redirect text messages to networks of other activists, for the price of a single text message. The system operates via a cheap DIY telephony server and uses a second hand mobile phone with a Pay As You Go “unlimited” texts service. The phone is connected via a USB cable to a recycled computer that operates the server. The project won an Ars Electronica Prize in 2011.
